Seasonal climate summary southern hemisphere (winter 1999): a return to near-normal conditions in the tropical Pacific

چکیده

The seasonal means of atmospheric and surface ocean indicators of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) revealed near-neutral conditions prevailed in the Pacific basin during austral winter 1999. The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) remained near zero, while the tropical Pacific sea-surface temperatures (SSTs), while on the cool side of climatology, were predominantly within 0.5°C of the mean. Low and upper-level wind anomalies in the Pacific basin were mixed, with the most notable features being anomAust. Met. Mag. 49 (2000) 139-148

Seasonal prediction skill of ECMWF System 4 and NCEP CFSv2 retrospective forecast for the Northern Hemisphere Winter

The seasonal prediction skill for the Northern Hemisphere winter is assessed using retrospective predictions (1982–2010) from the ECMWF System 4 (Sys4) and National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) CFS version 2 (CFSv2) coupled atmosphere–ocean seasonal climate prediction systems. Sys4 shows a cold bias in the equatorial Pacific but a warm bias is found in the North Pacific and part o...

A combination mode of the annual cycle and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation

The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is characterized by two main states: El Niño events defined by positive sea surface temperature anomalies in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and La Niña events marked by cooler surface temperatures in the same region. ENSO is broadly considered to be an oscillatory instability of the coupled ocean–atmosphere system in the tropical Pacific1–6 that shows...

Seasonal variations in mortality and clinical indicators in international hemodialysis populations from the MONDO registry

BACKGROUND Seasonal mortality differences have been reported in US hemodialysis (HD) patients. Here we examine the effect of seasons on mortality, clinical and laboratory parameters on a global scale. METHODS Databases from the international Monitoring Dialysis Outcomes (MONDO) consortium were queried to identify patients who received in-center HD for at least 1 year. Clinics were stratified ...

Rossby Waves Mediate Impacts of Tropical Oceans on West Antarctic Atmospheric Circulation in Austral Winter

Recent studies link climate change around Antarctica to the sea surface temperature of tropical oceans, with teleconnections from the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans making different contributions to Antarctic climate. In this study, the impacts of each ocean basin on the wintertime Southern Hemisphere circulation are identified by comparing simulation results using a comprehensive atmosph...
